WCCB Pier Lighting

Pier lighting can significantly impact the behavior and well-being of sea turtles, which are sensitive to artificial lighting in coastal areas. Turtle hatchlings immediately know where the water is by the direction of the moon. Artificial white light in the area disorients the hatchlings diverting them away from the water.

Some things to think about:

  • To minimize disruption, lighting should be amber, red, or orange LED lights.
  • Provide Low-Profile and Shielded Lighting to direct the lighting from the nesting areas and beach.
  • Pier lights should be as dim as possible while still maintaining safety for humans so dimming systems are recommended.
  • Astronomic and occupancy sensor lighting should be used.
  • • During the nesting season, which generally occurs between spring and fall, it’s especially important to reduce or eliminate pier lighting in areas where sea turtles are known to nest.
